09.11.10 - Bensalem, PA - TDBA Rockfest @ TD Bank Amphitheater

Howdy SR fans. Last night we played what turned out to be a very memorable show as the headliners of the TDBA Rockfest at TD Bank Amphitheater. This was the first ever SR performance on September 11, and SR made it one for the record books. The show started out rocking as usual with the Peacemaker, Life Was Never Finer 1-2 combo, and after a quick dedication to the lives lost on 9/11/01 we blasted through a rousing redition of One Day Everyday. The highlight of the night though was no doubt a version on Keeps Us Moving that surely none of us will ever forget, as Tim Doyle (a good friend of mine...this is Dan btw...and a good friend of the band) ran around the stage waving a giant American flag. There will be pictures and video of the epic moment coming to Facebook and YouTube shortly. Upon the conclusion of the American dream based song, the approximate 60+ crowd gave us a rousing ovation that we will personally never forget anytime soon. A great night for all, and a great night to celebrate the memory of those fallen. God Bless America.

Set List:
Peacemaker
Life Was Never Finer
Brand New Cadillac
One Day Everyday
All I Need
Falling off the Edge
Keeps Us Moving

This show marks the second show of what plans to be an epic next month or so for the band. Next week we will be at World Cafe in Philly on Friday night supporting our buddies Big Blue Spruce for their CD release. The week after that we will be performing double duty on the 25th as we provide the music for the Jackson PBA's 11th Annual Pig Roast in the afternoon, and then opening up once again for country stars Gloriana at Prospectors in Mount Laurel, NJ.

On October 2 we will be making our first appearance at the Laketon Inn in Lakewood, in preparation for our performance at Wingstock 2010 at First Energy Park in Lakewood on October 16.

Hope to see you at a show, and keep checking the FB, Myspace, and main page for constant band updates.

08.05.10 - Uncle Mike's, Eagles Flight Night, Beatles

Sup everyone, and welcome to the latest edition of the Stolen Rhodes blog. My name is Dan and I will be your bass player today.

Last Saturday SR was in the great city of New York playing at Uncle Mike's in Tribeca. The atmosphere on stage and in the audience was electric (at least it appeared that way to me). There was never a dull moment in the SR set was we blazed through a 45 minute set that included the classic Peacemaker/Life Was Never Finer 1-2 opener and was also highlighted by over-the-top out of control renditions of Falling off the Edge and Keeps Us Moving.

Peacemaker
Life Was Never Finer
Brand New Cadillac
One Day Everyday
Sympathy for the Devil
Falling off the Edge
Keeps Us Moving

Keep your ears open for our next journey to New York City.

For those of you in Philly. TONIGHT!!!! make sure you get your tickets to Eagles Flight Night and make sure you get there when the gates open and check out Stolen Rhodes before the Eagles take the field. We'll be playing from 5-6:30 so make sure you get down to the Linc for the show.

In honor of Paul McCartney's visit to Philly next weekend, and the fact that myself and Matt will be playing a set of Beatles music at Doylefest 2010 (if you know about it, and you know how to get there, then you will be there); I will be talking a lot about the Beatles the next week or so. I'll be recommending albums, songs, solo stuff, guitar solos, and to start it off...McCartney's best bass lines.

10. I Saw Her Standing There
Upon first listen the song just sounds like your basic I-IV-V early 1960's rock and roll tune. Upon closer inspection of Macca's bass part you realize that his note selection is just another reason why the Beatles were years ahead of their time in the world of rock music. Not too mention I've tried singing and playing this song and I just can't figure out how he does it while keeping the groove. The perfect bass line to one of the most awesome rock and roll tunes ever.

9. Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
This album track from the White Album truly is a gem that not enough Beatles fans know about. Underneath Lennon's rambunctious lyrics, and George's fuzz filled guitar is Macca doing his best James Jamerson impression. A classic funk filled Motownesque bass line is what really kicks this song up another notch.

8. And Your Bird Can Sing
Another classic album track, this time from Revolver. While this song is most memorable for the duel guitar lead of Harrison and McCartney, it is also Macca's beautifully flowing bass line that keeps this song (along with most songs and Revolver) in constant forward motion. The note selection for the bass line in the second bridge, and then the occasional octave hits during the verse are just another reason why Macca is one of the all time great musical minds.

7. Paperback Writer
First off, this song just rocks. End discussion. Add McCartney's creative use of a G7 arpeggio, and his call and response with Ringo before kicking into each of the songs four verses and you have yet another amazing two and a half minutes of rock and roll. The song is also notable as it is one the Beatles best vocal performances.

6. Taxman
No Beatles bass discussion can be done without this song. The song is driven by Macca's funk filled bass line that only gets dirtier during the songs bridge. Easily one of the greatest bass grooves ever. Not too mention Paul also plays a solid guitar solo on the tune.

5. All My Loving
Perfect example of Paul's knowledge of American jazz music. The bass line in this perfectly complements George's frantic lead guitar part. This song was one the Beatles earliest forays in taking jazz type chords and melodies and setting them to rock and roll music. Once again proving that as a songwriter they (Paul in this case) were years ahead of their time.

4. Rain
The B-Side to Paperback Writer is a song that many people don't give a full listen too. Upon first listen you hear the middle eastern vibe of the song, which was typical of many Beatles songs recorded during the Revolver sessions. Upon closer listen you hear McCartney playing just a beautiful melodic bass line that complements John's vocal line perfectly. His bass acts more like a piano in this tune, and is no doubt the lead instrument on the tune. If you're a bass player you need to give this one a listen.

3. With A Little Help From My Friends
Like Rain, With A Little Help From My Friends is a beautiful melodic bass line. Unlike Rain though this song takes melody and combines it with a driving rhythm to give this song its distinct feel. Sgt. Pepper's is also the Beatles album with Paul's best bass tone. It can be heard loud and clear on this tune and also on Getting Better (which just missed making this list).

2. Hey Bulldog
Definitely the most technically challenging bass line, Hey Bulldog moves at a feverish pace, full of sixteenth note syncopation, and creative melodic and rhythmic interpretation. Another example of McCartney playing a Jamersonesque bass line at times.

1. Something
Definitely the most beautiful bass line to the most beautiful love song ever written. Paul's and George are just at their musical best on this tune. Their bass and guitar parts, their vocal parts, and just the nature of the song in general. The bass line in the guitar solo is the most beautiful bass part ever written. Not too mention it complements one of the most beautiful guitar songs ever written. There can be no debate that this is the best Beatles bass tune (if not the best Beatles tune period).

07.29.10 - Album of the Day & Updates

Hey all,

Before we get to the album of the day I just want to remind everyone about this Saturday at Uncle Mike's in NYC. Doors at 8, and show at 8:30. We will be followed by our friends Big Blue Spruce. Epic is the only word that can describe what will be happening in Tribeca on Saturday night. Join us for a night of good times in NYC after the show.

Also a reminder to SR fans who happen to cheer on the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League. Make your way to the Linc on Thursday August 5 for Eagles Flight Night as SR will be the pre flight entertainment before the Eagles take the field at the Linc for the first time in 2010. Tickets are $10 for kids and $20 for adults. It's a night of fun for SR and Eagles fans of all ages.

Album of the Day:

As I was stumbling through my iTunes today I hit a forgotten southern rock gem that is overlooked by many rock fans. In 1987 the living members of Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited for the first time since the 1977 plane crash that killed singer Ronnie Van Zant; guitarist Steve Gaines; and Honkette Cassie Gaines. Skynyrd recruited Johnny Van Zant to replace his older brother behind the mic, and original guitarist (and Sweet Home Alabama songwriter) Ed King to take Gaines place. Randall Hall was brought in for Allen Collins on guitar as Collins suffered a car accident a few years earlier that left him paralyzed. Collins though served as musical director for the tour.

The resulting live album from the tour entitled Southern by the Grace of God has proved to be the high water mark of the band since their reforming in 1987. The album features the trademark triple guitar attack of Hall, King, and Gary Rossington, most noticeable of course on the epic Free Bird, which on the album is sung by the audience in Dallas, Texas. Though Van Zant lets the crowd takes Free Bird, he shines otherwise on the album which is chock full of Skynyrd classics such as That Smell, Swamp Music (a personal favorite of Kevin's), and You Got That Right. Bassist Leon Wilkeson proved that he hadn't missed a beat and shines on his trademark song What's Your Name. The highlight of the album though has to be the killer version of Call Me The Breeze, which features a hellraising fiddle solo by the legendary Charlie Daniels. Daniels also lends his voice along with .38 Special front man Donnie Van Zant to the classic Sweet Home Alabama.

After the success of the tour Skynyrd decided to keep chugging along, though pianist Billy Powell, Wilkeson, and Collins have all passed on since the recording of the album; while King and drummer Artimus Pyle have moved on from the group. Rossington and Van Zant continue under the name Lynyrd Skynyrd, and continue to tour constantly. The band has released plenty of albums since Southern by the Grace of God, but none have matched the magic of that original gathering. It is without a doubt the most worthy album to have the name Lynyrd Skynyrd printed on it since the reunion. Definitely worth a listen to if you are southern rock and/or guitar junkie.

07.27.10 - News, Upcoming Gigs, Album of the Day

Hello SR fans. We will be trying to make the Stolen Rhodes blog more of a reality now, with not only set list updates, and SR news; but also with journalistic type contributions. Such as album of the day, and insights on our favorite bands; albums; songs; guitarists; and such. Hope everyone enjoys the new format.

First off let me remind everyone about this Saturday in New York as SR will be hitting the stage at 8:30 at Uncle Mike's in Tribeca. We will be playing with our friends Big Blue Spruce. We also will be playing next Thursday August 5 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philly for Eagles Flight Night. We hope to see everyone there.

ALBUM OF THE DAY:

For this section of the blog we will obviously be highlighting a great album in the history of rock and roll, or funk, or country, or any genre of music that doesn't suck. You should then go listen to this album and enlighten yourself to its awesomeness. The first album up:

Back In Black - AC/DC

30 years ago AC/DC released this landmark hard rock recording. The album was a significant crossroad for the band, as it was their first since the death of original front man Bon Scott and the first with new front man Brian Johnson. The change in front man had no effect on Angus and company as they delivered not only another album of bone crushing guitar riffs, and masterfully crafted pentatonic scale guitar solos. Johnson stepped more than admirably into Scott's humongous shadow and has since created his own aura with the band that has lasted to this very day. The album itself boasts some of AC/DC's greatest work including Hells Bells, You Shook Me All Night Long, the title track, Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, Shoot to Thrill, and Let Me Put My Love Into You Babe. Angus Young stands out all over the album with some of the most recognizable guitar riffs in rock and roll history, while Phil Rudd and Cliff Williams lay down back to basics rhythm tracks that help the album move along at a fever pitch.

The album itself was wildly successful world wide, as it is the #2 selling album all time only behind Michael Jackson's Thriller; and is the #5 selling album in the United States. The album relaunched the career of AC/DC and the band still enjoys wild success today and sells out stadiums and arenas wherever they tour.

We here at Stolen Rhodes recommend this album to any human being who just needs to hear a kick ass rock and roll album today. They really don't get more kick ass than this one.

See you in NYC this weekend.

Shrine Bar - 04.01.10

Another night for Stolen Rhodes in New York City, and another great show for Stolen Rhodes in New York City. We made our triumphant and victorious return to the Shrine Bar on Thursday, where we played a solid 45-50 minute long set. The Harlem based venue is quickly becoming one of our favorite venues as once again the vibe, energy, and crowd we're outstanding. The show saw a bunch of classics, but a couple of twists to the set. Life Was Never Finer made its first appearance ever as a show opener, and we pulled out a rare cover with the Stevie Wonder classic Superstition. Look for us back at the Shrine on Thursday night May 20.

Set List:
Life Was Never Finer
Brand New Cadillac
All Night Long
One Day Everyday
Superstition (S. Wonder)
Beautiful Way
Keeps Us Moving

SR is off this weekend and we would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter or Passover. We will be back on Thursday night at Sweeney's in Northeast Philly for our first show at what we hear is a great venue. Look for us back in New Jersey on the 17th of this month as we play Surf Taco in Jackson. We'll be back in NYC on May 15 for our first appearance at the National Underground.

SR SetMcIntyre's 03.25.10

Hello Stolen Rhodes fans, and welcome to your latest installment of the Stolen Rhodes set list blog. Last night our travels to took us to Toms River, New Jersey on the Jersey Shore for another engagement at McIntyre's in Toms River. Of course McIntyre's is always a dear place in the heart of the band as we played our first gig there about two years ago. Last night we were one of two bands to take the stage along with End of an Era, who put on a great set themselves. Last nights show was a blistering set, with one blistering track after the other as the band tossed all their ballads aside for the set, in favor of their loud catalog showcasing Peacemaker and Life Was Never Finer to open the show, and closing out with Falling off the Edge and Keeps Us Moving to keep the energy at a 10 the whole show.

For those of you that missed the last show at the Shrine you missed on a good show at a great venue. Great people, great vibe, and decently priced booze. A must see show for all. SR goes on at 10 PM.

For those of you on the Jersey Shore, we will be back at Surf Taco on April 17 for a full set of SR, and on May 1 for ST's Cinco de Mayo Festival. Info on the Cinco de Mayo show will be coming shortly.

03.06.10 Benefit for Glenn Williscroft at Lakewood Elks

We had the pleasure to take part in a great celebration for Lakewood, New Jersey resident Glenn Williscroft. Much of the town Lakewood was out to support Glenn--who has been stricken with cancer--at the Lakewood Elks on Saturday afternoon. It was great to see much of the town out at the Elks supporting a long time resident. The event held a real special place for Dan and Matt as they grew up in Lakewood and the celebration gave them an opportunity to see many people they hadn't seen in a long time. It was even more special for Matt as he actually learned that his second cousin is married to Glenn (there are many Pillion's and Pillion related folk in Lakewood...too many to count).

The band had a couple of special guests as Matt's Dad (and Glenn's cousin once removed) joined the guys on backing vocals and played drums on an on-the-fly rendition of Sloop John B with the Irish Piping duo the Skyelanders, and Dan & Matt on vocals. There was food, drink, rock and roll, dancing, and good times all around. We in SR were very happy, honored, pleased, pleasured to headline such a great benefit show, that so many folks enjoyed.

We'll be taking a short two week break from gigging as Kevin will be heading down to Florida for the week to enjoy some rest and relaxation at Disney and at some Phillies ST games. Meanwhile back in NJ/PA Dan, Matt, and Ian will be continuing to write and rehearse, and continue with pre-production on SR's forthcoming album.

We'll be back in action on Friday March 19 in Doylestown, PA for our return to Puck Live. Look for a live recording of that show on your local web trade websites (along with a recording from our last show at the Stone Pony). We'll be sharing the stage with a Big Blue Spruce; whom you will be sure to enjoy if you like SR.

We'll be back at the Jersey Shore on Thursday March 25 as we play Original Music Night at McIntyre's in Toms River. Other bands to be announced.

Rock on,

Shrine Bar - 03.03.10

Stolen Rhodes made a very successful return to New York City on Wednesday night, playing at the Shrine Bar in Harlem. First off we must comment on how great of a venue this place was. Great mix of people, accented by a great mix of music throughout the night. The Dan Arcamone Trio provided the crowd with some solid and well played jazz, highlighted by the guitar skills of Arcamone. Stolen Rhodes went on second and played some of their funkier and soulful numbers including a sweet rendition of Beautiful Way and the return of Whipping Post to the set list. Following us was the nights headliner the Plaine Truth. If you are a fan of SR I highly suggest checking out the Plaine Truth. A great mix of rock and roll and blues of today and yesterday. All in all a great time was had by all parties involved and we look forward to playing at the venue again shortly.

Set List

Once again we would like to remind everyone of the benefit concert being put on by the Brother Elks of Lakewood, NJ on Saturday March 6. The benefit is for local Lakewood resident Glenn Williscroft who is battling cancer. The event starts at 2 PM, and goes until 7. SR will be hitting the stage at 4 PM, and will be joined by our friends the Skyelanders. A $20 donation is being asked for. Hope to see you all there. Also a reminder that our show on Saturday night at Fans in Jackson is canceled as are all future appointments there. We have decided to tell you as fans of our music, as Fans decided that they wanted to be unprofessional and not tell us. We'll hopefully have another Surf Taco date soon.

After the show on Saturday the band will be taking a week off as Kevin is taking a vacation down to Florida to see some Phillies ST games, and Ian will be rehabbing his busted up finger (you've gotta see it...it's gross, and the fact he is playing on it is quite the wonder).

We'll be back with a force on March 19 in Doylestown, PA at Puck Live, and we'll be returning to the Jersey Shore on March 25th at the place where we got our start; McIntyre's in Toms River.

Hope to see everyone at the next gigs, and thanks for all of your support.

Milk Boy Coffee 02.27.2010

Hey all. We had a great night at Milk Boy Coffee in Ardmore, PA just outside of Philly on Saturday night. Saturday was a special night for SR fans who came out, as we played a somewhat mellower set than normal, because of Milk Boy's more intimate type setting. We played for about a solid hour and a half, featuring some rare covers, and a couple older tunes that haven't been played in a while including a blazing version of Brand New Cadillac complete with a pre-song bass diddy by Dan that drew applause from the crowd (see link in set list for video). The night also included a four song acoustic set (a welcome break for Ian who has been playing on a banged up right index finger the past few weeks) including a laid back Life Was Never Finer, and a haunting version of Falling of the Edge.

Set List:
Faded Pictures

SR fans in NYC make sure you make your way out to the Shrine Bar in Manhattan on Wednesday night for a 10 PM show. This is our first appearance at what we continue to hear is a great venue.

Also for those of you in the Northern Ocean County Area we have two announcements. First off if you have the time and means please join Stolen Rhodes at the Lakewood Elks on Saturday afternoon at 2 PM for a special benefit show for Lakewood native Glenn Williscroft (Dan & Matt both hail from Lakewood originally). Glenn has been stricken with cancer and this is a show to help raise money for him and his family put on the Brother Elks of Lakewood. A $20 donation is asked for at the door. We hit the stage at 4:30 along with our good friends the Skyelanders providing pipe and drum music in between our sets...and who knows what other surprises might arise.

Secondly; for those of you planning on checking out our Fans show Saturday night in Jackson, please note that it is canceled, as are all of our future gigs there. That is all. We will be back for a show at Surf Taco soon.

Also keep checking the MySpace, Facebook, and Reverb Nation sites for all SR updates, and for you tweeters, make sure you become a follower of SR on Twitter.

Also Stolen Rhodes would like to congratulate the United States on their complete demolition of the 2010 Winter Olympics. USA! USA! USA!

Hope to see you all this week.

Stone Pony 02.19.10 w/ Black 47

What a great night Friday was at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park. Stolen Rhodes was proud and honored to have the opportunity to open up for Bronx based Irish rock legends Black 47. Stolen Rhodes was the second band to perform Friday night and they pulled no punches with a 40 minute balls to the wall opening set that saw Peacemaker find its way back to opener status, and saw the band blaze right through their first four songs of the night like an out of control freight train.

Friday was also big as SR brought in a film crew to record the entire show as part of a larger documentary being put together by band friend Rich Adragna. The band was on and energetic (despite Dan being sick as all hell) and clips from the show will be available shortly, along with documentary clips.

By the end of the show the crowd was chanting "one more song" though in tasteful form the band did not encore (unwritten rule: opening bands never encore).

Set List
Peacemaker
Life Was Never Finer
Spirit in the Night (B. Springsteen)
One Day Everyday
Idle Ways
Falling off the Edge
Keeps Us Moving

About an hour and a half later the headliners Black 47 took the stage, and what a performance they put on. There was energy, there was dancing, there was some sort of bagpipe looking instrument, there was funky bass solos...what a show. What a great band. We were just pleased and honored to be able to play with them that night, and everyone involved had a great time.

For those of you in the Philly area, come see us at Milkboy Live! this Saturday. Tickets can be bought in advance at this link http://www.milkboycoffee.com/events/view_entry.php?id=1440&date=20100227 for $8 or for $10 at the door.

We will be playing with:
Sarah Blacker - http://www.myspace.com/sarahblacker
&
Kevin James Devine - http://www.myspace.com/kevindevine0604

Hope to see you all there; it's going to be a great night.

Kenny's Castaways 01.30.10

Hey everyone,

We'd like to thank everyone who came out to Kenny's Castaways on Saturday night for our first show in NYC of 2010. Saturday's night set was quite energetic from the band. We switched up things a little, with Faded Pictures making its first appearance as a show opener. The energy didn't dull until the fifth song in as we followed Faded Pictures with Life Was Never Finer, Spirit in the Night, and One Day Everyday all in succession. Peacemaker also remained towards the end of the set, a place where it is likely to stay for a while. By the end of the set a nice crowd had gathered towards the front of Kenny's as the people there for the other bands were singing along to the chorus of Keeps Us Moving. As of now we won't be back in NYC until March 3 when we will be playing at the Shrine Bar in Harlem. As always follow us at FB, Myspace, and Twitter for updates. Also www.stolenrhodes.com will be launching soon, as Matt is building the website as we speak.

Also if anyone would like advance tickets for our February 19 show at the Stone Pony with Black 47, or advance tickets for our February 27 show at Milkboy Live please contact Dan, Kevin, Matt, or Ian. We hope to see everyone there.

In other SR news, Dan did a little moonlighting this weekend, as he performed with old college buddy and avid SR fan Michelangelo Quirinale and his band for the Brooklyn Guitar School's student showcase. The group performed a set of Led Zeppelin tunes including Whole Lotta Love, Houses of the Holy, No Quarter, Achilles Last Stand, and Kashmir. For more information on our friends at Brooklyn Guitar School please visit them at www.facebook.com/brooklynguitarschool.

We'll be playing at the Nail in Ardmore, PA this Friday. Hope to see you there.

01.22.10 Mad Hatter (Sea Bright) & 01.23.10 Surf Taco (Jackson)

Hey all and welcome to the first ever Stolen Rhodes blog. We hope you enjoy.

We had a great weekend playing on the Jersey Shore. Friday night we we're up in Monmouth County at Mad Hatters in Sea Bright. We played three sets, with a two song encore. This was our first show at Mad Hatters; a watering hole for the locals of Northern Monmouth County. We opened with a blistering 1-2 combo of One Day Everyday into the Springsteen classic Spirit in the Night (an opening combo that has taken the place of the Peacemaker/Life Was Never Finer combo that dominated our set list during the summer and fall of '09). Peacemaker was moved to the end of the set for the first time kicking off the encore along with Keeps Us Moving. Other highlights from the show included a blistering rendition of the Tom Petty classic Mary Jane's Last Dance; which has expanded into a 6 or so minute long jam with guitar solos by Kevin and Matt. We also premiered our newest song, End of Alone; which the band agreed was one of the best songs played that night.

Keeps Us Moving

Saturday night we were back at Surf Taco in Jackson. The band played an epic 24 song; 3 hour marathon set with no breaks except for a drum set change as Matt's father Eddie Pillion came up and jammed on a blistering Up On Cripple Creek with us. The band also threw a "quiet" number into the set as Dan and Matt played a two guitar version of the Springsteen classic Atlantic City. Highlights of the night included a very solid and soulful Beautiful Way that involved Dan going into the crowd and fraternizing with a couple fans; a great version of the Stevie Wonder classic Superstition (complete with Dan's bass solo...and Dan's hair); and rousing rendition of Keeps Us Moving to close the night, with the SR Lovely Ladies on stage singing along.
